DRUGLORDS OF THE AVENUES ‘GOTTA LIGHT’ WITH PIRATES PRESS RECORDS – BAY AREA PUNKS SET TO RELEASE THIRD FULL-LENGTH ALBUM

Bay Area punk outfit Druglords of the Avenues are set to release their long-awaited third full-length album, Gotta Light, in 2026 via Pirates Press Records.

What began as a side endeavor between veteran San Francisco singer Johnny “Peebucks” Bonnel — known for his work with Swingin’ Utters, Filthy Thieving Bastards, and Primitive Heads — and guitarist Matt Grayson has since matured into a fully realized band with its own distinct character. Now joined by guitarist Rob Pierce, bassist Michael Mininger, and drummer Robert Faria, the group appears firmly established, delivering its brand of high-velocity, storytelling street punk with renewed force.

Earlier recordings revealed a range of influences, from the blistering attack of punk and hardcore mainstays to the ragged folk stylings of Celtic-tinged ensembles and the brooding edge of alternative rock. On Gotta Light, those elements converge into a sound that is both rollicking and deliberate.

What distinguishes Druglords of the Avenues is not merely their pace, but their perspective. Beneath the breakneck guitars and pounding rhythm section lies a commitment to narrative songwriting rooted in working-class experience. The album’s characters populate sidewalks and alleyways, their lives marked by hardship, stubborn resolve, and uneasy compromise.

The single “Ghetto Sidewalks” offers a pointed example. In it, Bonnel pairs intricate wordplay with stark images of urban decline, declaring, “We need some light on the ghetto sidewalks / We’re always stumbling in the dark.” The line encapsulates the album’s broader spirit: a call for illumination amid struggle.

Across Gotta Light, the figures who move through these songs are presented without judgment. Their mistakes and conflicts stand as facts of lived experience rather than moral lessons. Druglords of the Avenues serve as chroniclers, giving voice to the overlooked and the weathered, and delivering their stories with both velocity and conviction.
